What is this?
We hope you can join us for our final SPARKLE before we break for the summer:
Preserving the Legacy of an Iconic Montgomery County Farmer: The Charles Koiner Center for Urban Farming
with Founder & Director of Education Kate Medina. This garden talk will also be followed by a tour of the farm, and a Potluck Picnic for all to enjoy under the breeze of the trees. Last year's event was a memorable one, so we hope you can join us for what is bound to be another enjoyable visit at the Koiner Farm.
The founders of a new urban agriculture nonprofit in Montgomery County will discuss life and work at the Koiner Farm in downtown Silver Spring, and their mission to steward and manage urban farms across the county for the purpose of hands-on STEM education. Koiner Farm, established in 1983, is a landmark for fresh produce and neighborhood interaction. The Charles Koiner Center for Urban Farming, named in honor of the 98-year old head farmer, has been established to ensure that Koiner Farm not only remains a working farm in perpetuity, but also becomes a hub of agricultural education for the surrounding community. Extending this vision further, the founders seek to support a network of urban farms across the county that are bound by a commitment to inspiring the next generation of sustainable food innovators. Acting on this vision, the founders will discuss their educational, farm management and land stewardship programs at the flagship Koiner Farm.

About our presenter
Kate Medina
is Founder and Director of Education at The Charles Koiner Center for Urban Farming. CKC Farming (as it's known) is a new nonprofit in Montgomery County, Maryland that aims to inspire local food innovators through greater access to urban farms. CKC Farming operates at Koiner Farm in downtown Silver Spring. Koiner Farm is owned by Mr. Charles Koiner, now 98. CKC Farming provides support to Charles as he continues to farm his 1-acre plot and assists his daughter Lynn in fulfilling her vision of maintaining the property as a working farm in perpetuity.
As the Director of Education, Kate is tasked with hosting school field trips, managing summer interns, organizing volunteer days and planning community events. In addition, Kate strives to create innovative, hands-on, farm-based learning exhibits for visitors to enjoy. Kate is also a part-time Biology professor at Montgomery College and Mom of three young kids. She is passionate about good food and hopeful that greater access to farms will result in healthy, informed, caring citizens armed to make critical decisions for their future.
