This will be a free-speech discourse on subjects ancient and recent, holy and horrid. We will meet twice a month to consider what delights, amazes, and challenges our intellects. We will discuss subjects that particularly interest you and that may be relevant to all of us. Each participant is encouraged to contribute to the discussion from their own perspective and to listen thoughtfully to the contributions of others.
To begin, I will lead with the topic of the life and work of Socrates of Athens, Greece, circa 470 to 399 BC. There is much to learn about this man and his work. His philosophy has been the foundation of our western civilization. He established the first school of learning and philosophy in the western hemisphere. You can find plenty information about Socrates at Wikipedia.org under his name. After introductions, I will discuss his life, thoughts, and contributions to our lives, and you will have an equal chance to share your opinion and connection with his integrity and philosophy. To come prepared, in advance of the session please read the Wikipedia article on Socrates and the websites linked to in the Wikipedia article. RSVP required, via the Village website calendar, or by email to programs@silverspringvillage.org The first and third Mondays of the month from 11:00 to 12:30 in the Village office.
