SUMMARY:Village Book Club at Charles McGee Library
DESCRIPTION:Silver Spring Village’s in-person book club will meet on the fourth Thursday afternoon of each month at 3:00 at the Brig. General Charles McGee Library at 900 Wayne Avenue. \nThe April 2025 book is: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus \nSet in 1960s California\, this blockbuster debut is the hilarious\, idiosyncratic\, and uplifting story of a female scientist whose career is constantly derailed by the idea that a women’s place is in the home\, only to find herself starring as the host of America’s most beloved TV cooking show.  Laugh-out-loud funny\, shrewdly observant\, and studded with a dazzling case of supporting characters\, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist. \n

All are welcome. \nThe March 2025 book is: Island of Seawomen\, by Lisa See. \nSet on the Korean island of Jeju\, Mi-ja and Young-sook\, two girls from very different backgrounds\, begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective. Over many decades — through the Japanese colonialism of the 1930s and 1940s\, World War II\, the Korean War\, and the era of cellphones and wet suits for the women divers — Mi-ja and Young-sook develop the closest of bonds. Nevertheless\, their differences are impossible to ignore: Mi-ja is the daughter of a Japanese collaborator\, forever marking her\, and Young-sook was born into a long line of haenyeo and will inherit her mother’s position leading the divers. After hundreds of dives and years of friendship\, forces outside their control will push their relationship to the breaking point. \n

DESCRIPTION:Silver Spring Village’s in-person book club will meet on the fourth Thursday afternoon of each month at 3:00 at the Brig. General Charles McGee Library at 900 Wayne Avenue.  All are welcome. \nThe February book is: A Fever in the Heartland by Timothy Egan \nA historical thriller by the Pulitzer and National Book Award-winning author that tells the riveting story of the Klan’s rise to power in the 1920s\, the cunning con man who drove that rise\, and the woman who stopped them. The Roaring Twenties was the height of the uniquely American hate group\, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not only the old Confederacy but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks\, Jews\, Catholics\, and immigrants in equal measure\, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D. C. Stephenson. Stephenson was a magnetic presence whose life story changed with every telling. Within two years of his arrival in Indiana\, he’d become the Grand Dragon of the state and the architect of the strategy that brought the group out of the shadows — their message endorsed from the pulpits of local churches\, spread at family picnics and town celebrations. Judges\, prosecutors\, ministers\, governors\, and senators across the country all proudly proclaimed their membership. But at the peak of his influence\, it was a seemingly powerless woman — Madge Oberholtzer — who would reveal his secret cruelties\, and whose deathbed testimony finally brought the Klan to their knees. \n

DESCRIPTION:Silver Spring Village’s in-person book club will meet on the fourth Thursday afternoon of each month at 3:00 at the Brig. General Charles McGee Library at 900 Wayne Avenue. \nThe book is: Crying In H Mart by Michelle Zauner \nIn this exquisite story of family\, food\, grief\, and endurance\, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist. With humor and heart\, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene\, Oregon; of struggling with her mother’s particular\, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother’s tiny apartment in Seoul\, where she and her mother would bond\, late at night\, over heaping plates of food. Vivacious and plainspoken\, lyrical and honest\, Zauner’s voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely\, and complete with family photos. \n

\nThe book is: The Half Known Life: In Search Of Paradise by Pico Iyer \nA journey through competing ideas of paradise to see how we can live more peacefully in an ever more divided and distracted world. Paradise: that elusive place where the anxieties\, struggles\, and burdens of life fall away. Most of us dream of it\, but each of us has very different ideas about where it is to be found. For some it can be enjoyed only after death; for others\, it’s in our midst—or just across the ocean—if only we can find eyes to see it. Traveling from Iran to North Korea\, from the Dalai Lama’s Himalayas to the ghostly temples of Japan\, Pico Iyer brings together a lifetime of explorations to upend our ideas of utopia and ask how we might find peace in the midst of difficulty and suffering. Does religion lead us back to Eden or only into constant contention? Why do so many seeming paradises turn into warzones? And does paradise exist only in the afterworld – or can it be found in the here and now? For almost fifty years Iyer has been roaming the world\, mixing a global soul’s delight in observing cultures with a pilgrim’s readiness to be transformed. In this culminating work\, he brings together the outer world and the inner to offer us a surprising\, original\, often beautiful exploration of how we might come upon paradise in the midst of our very real lives.
