SUMMARY:SPARKLE: You and Your Neighborhood Stream
DESCRIPTION:You and Your Neighborhood Stream will feature Deb Briceland-Betts\, President of the Neighbors of the Northwest Branch\, a local citizen-based action group dedicated to restoring the health of the NW Branch of the Anacostia River. Learn about the work being done to improve the health of this important watershed and what one person can do at home to make a difference in the quality of their community’s water. \nA major ecological\, recreational\, and historic corridor\, the Northwest Branch watershed is a critical\, albeit degraded\, subwatershed of the Anacostia River that includes portions of the communities of Silver Spring\, Wheaton\, Kemp Mills\, and Four Corners. Essential for regional water quality\, biodiversity\, and the region’s drinking water supply\, it faces significant challenges from urbanization\, including high levels of impervious surfaces\, pollution\, and degradation of natural habitats. \nDeb Briceland-Betts\, a former nonprofit executive and Legal Services attorney\, was certified in environmental law while in law school. In her retirement\, she focuses on volunteer work for environmental causes that bring her joy\, including serving for five years as a citizen scientist for the Anacostia Riverkeeper. Currently President of the Neighbors of the Northwest Branch\, Deb has served on their Board since 2023. \nRegistration is encouraged.  Use the Village calendar\, email operations@silverspringvillage.org or call 240-307-4132 \nSPARKLE is a monthly education series organized by Silver Spring Village and Silver Spring Town Center.

SUMMARY:SPARKLE: Guns\, Gangs & Terrorism
DESCRIPTION:“The Joy of Writing Narrative Nonfiction and How the Ugliest Painting I Ever Saw Still Inspires Me” with author Tom Diaz. A discussion of the challenges\, joys\, and frustrations of writing nonfiction books about some of the modern world’s grimmest realities. Lots of people have good ideas about books that could be written. But translating even the greatest of ideas into a finished product takes years of work. Diaz uses examples from his six published nonfiction books to illustrate the process of building a well-crafted book from inspiration through research\, writing\, and publication. \nTom Diaz is a retired lawyer and former journalist. He has written six nonfiction books\, a number of monographs and articles about crime\, terrorism\, and firearms\, and several self-published novels that he calls his “worst sellers”.  He is a graduate of the University of Florida and the Georgetown University Law Cener. Diaz practiced  civil and criminal law in his legal career.  As a journalist he reported on the Supreme Court and national security at The Washington Times newspaper. He then became an assistant managing editor from 1985 to 1991.  From 1991 to 1993\, Diaz worked at the National Strategy Information Center\, where he focused on the study of terrorism and international organized crime. From 1993 to 1997\, he was Democratic counsel on the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Crime and Criminal Justice. His subject matter specialties were counterterrorism and firearms legislation. Diaz was senior policy analyst at a gun violence reduction organization from 1997 until his retirement in 2012. \nSPARKLE programs are open to the public.  Registration is encouraged. Non Village members may register by emailing operations@silverspringvillage.org or calling 240-833-5580 x 6. Village members may register by logging into the Member Portal and signing up on the members-only events calendar.

SUMMARY:SPARKLE: Treasure Behind the Stove with Storyteller Noa Baum
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce a very special SPARKLE event: Treasure Behind the Stove with Storyteller Noa Baum  Join us to connect with ancient wisdom and timeless values in this special spoken word performance where personal and traditional stories connect in unexpected ways. With delightful drama and daring\, internationally acclaimed storyteller and author Noa Baum offers us gems from her trove of family stories and rich Jewish heritage. \nAbout Noa Baum:  Storytelling is the intersection of my work as a performance artist\, author\, and educator. I focus on the transformative power of storytelling both as performance art and an applicable tool to heal across differences and build bridges of understanding\, compassion and peace.  My art form can be described as Performance Storytelling – borrowing from principles of traditional storytelling as well as using tools from theater through the mixing of narration and characterization to evoke a story in the audiences’ imagination. I love connecting with people of all ages and backgrounds through stories. I enjoy telling stories from cultures around the world as well as my Jewish heritage. I use stories to promote appreciation of differences\, foster collaboration\, and spark innovation. I love witnessing the shift in attitude and smiles as workshop participants experience the transformative power of story. But most rewarding is when people come up after a presentation to share their story with me: “That reminded me of a story …”\, then I know my work has reached the most important place – their heart. \nSPARKLE programs are open to the public.  Registration is encouraged. Non Village members may register by emailing operations@silverspringvillage.org or calling 240-833-5580 x 6. Village members may register by logging into the Member Portal and signing up on the members-only events calendar.

SUMMARY:SPARKLE: Cuba's Complexities and Contradictions
DESCRIPTION:Cuba – The Pearl of the Antilles – has a rich history that goes back centuries. Havana\, its capital city\, is over 500 years old. Its culture is a mix of European (mostly Spaniards) and Africans (mostly from West Africa). Cuba is not a museum. It is a vibrant – if complex – society. Cuba’s current realities are certainly challenging – and complicated. \nOur guide\, Reemberto Rodriguez\, was born in Cuba\, raised and schooled in the deep south (Atlanta\, GA)\, and now lives in Silver Spring. He has journeyed to Cuba 15 times over the last decade and teaches an interdisciplinary study abroad course for the University of Maryland in Havana. \nHe will share stories about his journeys to Cuba and Cuba’s rich history\, its relationship with the US through the ages\, the current context of today’s Cuba\, and future possibilities. Come with your questions! \nSPARKLE programs are open to the public.  Registration is encouraged. Non Village members may register by emailing operations@silverspringvillage.org or calling 240-833-5580 x 6.
