A senior village is a nonprofit membership organization offering volunteer and affordable services for older adults living in a particular geographic area. Throughout the U.S. and abroad, senior villages are helping make it possible for individuals to remain in their own homes as their advancing age poses challenges to their independence.
Soon, the benefits of village membership and opportunities to volunteer will be available to residents of downtown Silver Spring, MD. Our Village service area is centered in zip code 20910, which encompasses Silver Spring's commercial core and the neighborhoods that surround it.
A village can be the basis for strengthening intergenerational relationships and a sense of community, as neighbors help each other and interact in a variety of new activities. A village is like a hybrid of an elderly cooperative, a social club, and a concierge service. It can, for example, link members to younger volunteers who might help with grocery shopping, clear a snowy walkway, or change a light bulb, and to trusted professionals for home repairs, transportation, and home health care. Social activities might include in-home get-togethers, educational programs, a movie outing, or a walking club.

Work to establish Silver Spring Village is ongoing. We plan to begin enrolling members and volunteers in mid-2013 and to open before the end of the year.
