Liability Protection
- The federal Volunteer Protection Act and the Maryland Volunteer Service Act protect volunteers from liability for any harm they may cause while acting within the scope of their duties.
- The Village’s liability insurance protects against injury to volunteers in excess of their own insurance coverage.

Who we’re looking for:
- Volunteers who are 18 or older. In some circumstances, teens can volunteer with a parent who is a volunteer and earn SSL credits.
- Volunteers who can provide services in Silver Spring or nearby. Some helpful tasks like friendly call and administrative work can be be done remotely.
- Volunteers who can pass a criminal background check if they want to work directly with Village members. Checks are not required for volunteers helping with administrative work, volunteering in groups, or for minors accompanied by a parent who is a trained Village volunteer.
- Volunteer drivers who can provide a current driver’s license and proof of auto insurance, can complete a driving history check showing no “points,” and drive a vehicle that meets normal safety and reliability standards.
