In the first half of this talk, Joy Ladin will use her experiences growing up as a transgender child in hiding and later as the first openly transgender employee of an Orthodox Jewish institution (Yeshiva University) as the basis of an exploration of how notions of gender are changing and clashing with traditional views. Personal anecdotes will help illuminate the stakes for individuals, communities, and religious traditions. In the second half, she will talk about how her journeys between genders and Jews have inspired and shaped her work as a writer and poet, particularly her memoir, National Jewish Book Award finalist "Through the Door of Life: a Jewish Journey Between Genders;" her book of trans theology, "The Soul of the Stranger: God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective;" and her trilogy of explicitly Jewish poetry collections about the relationship between God and humanity, National Jewish Book Award winner "The Book of Anna," "Psalms," and last year‘s "Shekhinah Speaks."

Silver Spring Civic Building, Spring Room
Join us for a screening of three short documentary videos featuring villagers Marge Hirano, Martha Wittman, and Cheryl Gardner. Marge‘s video talks about her experience as a professional artist (there might even be a little about her stint working at Playboy). Martha‘s is about her experience dancing professionally--something she only recently gave up. And Cheryl‘s will explore her exciting time as a student in Paris during the 60s. Light refreshments will be served.
The Village has 20 free tickets to a performance of August Wilson‘s "Radio Golf" at Round House Theatre. As usual, this needs to be a quick turnaround, so reservations are required no later than noon on Thursday, June 7. The performance will be on Thursday, June 17, at 7:30 pm.
Performance Description: Following Two Trains Running (2014) and Gem of the Ocean (2018), Round House returns to Pittsburgh’s Hill District, where Harmond Wilks is redeveloping the struggling neighborhood with business partner (and golf enthusiast) Roosevelt Hicks while running to become the city’s first Black mayor. With a shiny new high-rise planned and Whole Foods set to move in, one house stands in the way: 1839 Wylie Avenue, home of Wilson’s renowned Aunt Ester. As Roosevelt aims to win the game that has been set against him all his life, Harmond reaches a crossroads as history and progress collide. “Surprising, suspenseful, and crowd-rousing” (New York Times), Radio Golf concludes this stunning cycle of plays portraying 20th-century Black life by one of America’s most influential playwrights.
