What is this?
We'll meet at the AFI/Silver box office on Wednesday March 8 at 6:15pm for the classic 1970 Italian film The Conformist.
Director Bernardo Bertolucci's masterpiece, adapted from the novel by Alberto Moravia, chronicles the desperate quest to belong by a bourgeois Italian during the rise of Fascism in the 1930s. Jean-Louis Trintignant slyly portrays Marcello Clerici, a man fearful of his identity — both socially and sexually — whose maniacal obsession with normality leads him to Fascist politics, an ill-fated marriage to Giulia (Stefania Sandrelli), a spectacularly dangerous affair with femme fatale Anna (Dominique Sanda) and the betrayal of a kindly mentor — only to discover that demonic conformity is the surest route to depravity. A pinnacle of cinema, boasting art deco sets, an affecting score by Georges Delerue and camerawork by the great Vittorio Storaro ("his accomplishment may be the apex of color cinematography." – Michael Atkinson, The Village Voice), this is a must-see on the big screen! DIR/SCR Bernardo Bertolucci, from the novel by Alberto Moravia; PROD Maurizio Lodi-Fè. Italy/France/West Germany, 1970, color, 114 min. In Italian with English subtitles. RATED R
The film will be introduced at 6:30pm by David Rothman, professor of theater and film at Montgomery College, who will also lead a discussion after the film.
We'll meet at the box office at 6:15 so we can buy our tickets together. RSVPs are recommended.
